January 20, 2011—Delta TechOps recently completed the final winglet installations on its fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft with the last airplane returning to service Monday. The Winglet Crew installed blended winglets on 71 aircraft. The winglets are wing-tip extensions to improve aircraft fuel efficiency by reducing aircraft drag and altering airflow.
“The team took the complex task of adding structural blended winglets to the 737 fleet and made it look easy,” said Bruce Snyder, foreman-Delta TechOps. “They worked together with precision to complete the task under budget and in just nine days.”
Delta has 73 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, two of which had winglets installed by Boeing prior to delivery.
